Six live measurements from one text

As you type, the page reports whitespace-separated words, all characters, characters excluding spaces, estimated sentences, paragraphs and reading time. Word and sentence rules vary among editors and languages, so these figures may differ from Microsoft Word, Google Docs or a publishing platform. Use the counter that governs a formal limit when an exact match is required.

Check length limits and estimate reading time

  • Check a draft against a word or character limit
  • Estimate the reading time of an article
  • Review paragraph distribution before publishing
  • Compare character totals with and without spaces

Frequently asked questions

How is the word count calculated?
It splits on whitespace and counts the nonempty chunks. Hyphenated expressions and long strings without spaces therefore count as one word. Other editors may tokenize punctuation and languages differently.
How accurate is sentence counting?
It is an estimate based on sentence-ending punctuation rather than full language analysis. Abbreviations, decimals, initials and unusual punctuation can create false breaks or missed sentences.
How is reading time estimated?
It divides the word count by 200 words per minute and rounds according to the tool’s display rule, with at least one minute for nonempty text. Actual speed varies widely with reader, language and complexity.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. JavaScript calculates the statistics locally while you type.
