WEBP and PNG handle image data differently

WEBP supports lossy and lossless encoding as well as transparency. PNG uses lossless compression and is common in design, document and graphics workflows. Converting can solve a format requirement and preserve transparent pixels, but it cannot recover detail already discarded by a lossy WEBP source. The PNG may also be larger.

When a PNG copy is the practical choice

  • Open a WEBP graphic in an editor that requires PNG
  • Create a transparent PNG for a specific design workflow
  • Prepare an accepted PNG copy for a destination that rejects WEBP
  • Avoid another lossy encoding step while continuing to edit a decoded image

Frequently asked questions

Will transparency be preserved?
Yes. Unlike JPG, PNG can store the transparent pixels decoded from the WEBP. Inspect the output because an unusual or unsupported source feature may render differently.
Will the file size increase?
It may. PNG and WEBP use different encoding methods, and file size depends on image content and how the source was compressed. A photographic or lossy WEBP often expands substantially when saved as PNG.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs locally in your browser.
Can I convert multiple WEBP files at once?
Yes. Select or drag multiple WEBP files and download the PNG copies individually or as a group.
