This extracts the first frame only, as a still image, not the full animation.
Turn the first GIF frame into a still image
The converter decodes a GIF and saves its first frame as a non-animated JPG or PNG. This works well when the opening frame contains the preview you need. Because an animation can change after that frame, check the result rather than assuming it represents the whole GIF.
When the first frame is enough
- Create a thumbnail from the opening frame of an animated GIF
- Prepare a still image for a platform that accepts JPG or PNG but not GIF
- Place the first GIF frame in a document or design
- Replace a GIF animation with a static preview when motion is unnecessary
Frequently asked questions
Can I extract a frame other than the first one?
No. The current tool extracts only the first GIF frame. Use a frame-specific animation editor if you need a later moment.
Will this convert the whole animation?
No. The download contains one still image, so the remaining frames and animation timing are not included.
Should I choose JPG or PNG?
Choose PNG when the GIF frame needs transparency or lossless output. JPG can be efficient for photographic frames, but it uses lossy compression and does not support transparency. The smaller option depends on the image.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. JavaScript decodes and exports the image locally in your browser.
