Turn a PDF text layer into plain text

The tool reads text objects from every PDF page and presents their contents as plain text with page markers. It does not reproduce fonts, columns or table structure, and the extracted reading order may differ from the visual page when the PDF stores text in separate positioned fragments. You can copy the result or save it as a .txt file.

When layout matters less than the words

  • Move PDF wording into an email, document or spreadsheet
  • Prepare PDF content as plain text for search or another processing tool
  • Archive the words separately from the original page design
  • Check whether a PDF contains a usable text layer

Frequently asked questions

Why is the output empty or very short?
A scanned PDF page may contain only pixels, with no text objects to extract. Empty output can also result from outlined text, unusual character maps, encryption or a damaged file. This tool does not perform OCR.
Will the extracted text keep the original formatting?
No. The result is plain text. Fonts, precise spacing, columns, tables, images and page design are not retained, and complex layouts can produce an unexpected reading order.
Can I extract text from just one page?
The tool processes every page. Page markers in the output make it easier to locate and copy the section you need.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. JavaScript extracts the text locally inside your browser.
