What is WebP?

Google developed WebP as an image format for the web. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation, while standard JPEG focuses on lossy still images. WebP can be smaller for comparable visual results, but the difference varies by image and encoder. Quality numbers from different encoders are not a universal equivalence, so compare the actual outputs.

Why websites deliver WebP

When WebP produces a useful size reduction, it can reduce image transfer and improve loading time. A site may store WebP directly or generate it through an image service and negotiate formats with the browser. Teams still need to consider source quality, encoding cost, caching, fallbacks, editing workflows, and the formats accepted by downstream systems.

Where WebP compatibility breaks down

The catch is that "the web" and "every piece of software on your computer" aren't the same thing. Plenty of image editors, older design tools, some printing services, and certain upload forms still don't recognize .webp files, especially software that hasn't been updated in a while. When that happens you'll see a generic "unsupported format" error, a broken image icon, or the upload gets rejected outright. The file itself isn't broken; the receiving software doesn't have a WebP decoder.

Why the saved format may not match what you expected

Saving an image generally preserves the resource the site delivered to your browser, which may be WebP even if another source format exists. If the destination rejects it, you can convert a copy, use software with WebP support, or obtain an alternative version from the publisher when available.

Does converting WebP to JPG lose quality?

Converting to JPEG decodes the WebP and encodes the pixels again with lossy compression. That can introduce visible artifacts, depending on the source, settings, and number of previous encodes. JPEG also has no alpha channel, so transparent pixels must be flattened against a background. Compare the result before discarding the WebP.

When a destination explicitly requires JPEG, create a JPG copy and confirm its dimensions, background, appearance, and file size. JPEG has broad support, but no format opens in every application. Keep the WebP source in case you need its transparency or want to make another conversion later.

Is WebP better than JPG? Neither format wins in every workflow. WebP offers more coding modes and features; JPEG may be easier to exchange with established software and services.

Will the JPG be larger? It may be larger or smaller depending on both files' encoder settings and content. File size alone does not establish equivalent quality.

Should I use JPG everywhere? Use the format that fits each destination. JPEG cannot preserve transparency and is not ideal for every graphic, while a site may still deliver WebP when you save its images.
