Why page order and sheet order aren't the same thing

A PDF normally runs from page 1 to page 2 and onward. A saddle-stitched booklet is assembled from folded sheets nested inside one another. The outer sheet wraps around the entire document, so it must contain both covers. The innermost sheet carries the center spread. Imposition assigns four document pages to the two sides of every physical sheet.

How the page pairs are calculated

For a document padded to a multiple of 4 pages (call the total N), sheet index i (starting at 0 for the outermost sheet) carries these four page numbers:

• Front side: page N − 2i on the left, page 2i + 1 on the right
• Back side: page 2i + 2 on the left, page N − 2i − 1 on the right

For an 8-page document, i = 0 places pages 8 and 1 on the front of the outer sheet. At i = 1, the inner sheet receives pages 6, 3, 4 and 5. Once folded and nested, those apparently unusual pairs fall into normal reading order.

Blank pages complete the final sheet

Every physical sheet represents four booklet pages. If the document total is not divisible by four, blank pages are added before imposition. Their exact positions depend on the padding strategy and page-order algorithm, so inspect the preview if a blank must appear in a particular place.

Verify the duplex flip before printing the full job

Booklet sheets are usually laid out in landscape and folded through the middle. The correct long-edge or short-edge duplex choice depends on the imposed orientation, printer driver and paper path. A wrong setting can turn every back side upside down. Print and fold one test sheet before committing the whole document.

Practical printing checks

Once the PDF has been imposed, it can usually be printed from an ordinary PDF viewer. Disable any second booklet or multiple-pages-per-sheet setting in the print dialog, or the driver may rearrange the already imposed pages again.

With a single-sided printer, print one side, reinsert the stack and print the other. Feed direction varies by printer, so mark a test sheet to learn which face and edge must enter first.

A source document does not need to contain a multiple of four pages. The imposition process can add enough blanks to complete the final sheet.

The unexpected order is dictated by the physical booklet, not chosen arbitrarily. A preview and one folded proof are the safest checks for page sequence, orientation, margins and printer behavior.
